Pompompurin, the star of the new dessert, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut in 2026. The popular Sanrio character also took first place in the 2026 Sanrio Character Ranking for the second consecutive year. Pompompurin is a golden retriever boy known for his signature dark brown beret.

At a Ginza Cozy Corner store in Japan shortly after opening, rows of cakes featuring Pompompurin’s adorable face were lined up inside the display case. Even the 777-yen price tag seemed to add a little extra sense of good luck. The side of each cake is wrapped in a limited-edition film featuring Pompompurin.

After removing the film, a bright yellow cake is revealed. Its color scheme closely resembles Pompompurin himself. His face is shaped with pudding-flavored cream, which has an exceptionally light texture that melts almost instantly in the mouth. A spoonful of the cream on its own is so airy and smooth that it practically disappears.

Compared with traditional custard cream, the pudding-flavored cream has a more restrained vanilla note, allowing the flavors of egg and sugar to come through in roughly equal measure. The result is mild and approachable.

Inside the cake is caramel sauce. Given the dessert’s cute appearance and generally gentle sweetness, its surprisingly intense bitterness can catch you off guard. Tasted on its own, the caramel sauce delivers a particularly strong bitter note. When eaten together with the rest of the cake, however, the bitterness becomes much more balanced, adding a pleasant roasted aroma and contrast to the sweetness.

The sponge cake is soft and fluffy and pairs nicely with the whipped cream, which contains fresh cream. With a relatively simple combination of sponge cake, two types of cream and caramel sauce, the dessert manages to capture Pompompurin’s character remarkably well.

For visitors to Japan and Sanrio fans looking for a limited-edition Japanese dessert, the cake offers an especially photogenic way to celebrate Pompompurin’s 30th anniversary.

The “Pompompurin Pudding-Style Cake” is available for a limited time at participating Ginza Cozy Corner stores in Japan. Prices may vary by store, and the product may not be available at all locations. Specifications are subject to change. Decorative picks and accessories are not edible. The cake is available in limited quantities and may sell out.
