After the great fire of Matsumoto and Minami-Fukashi in 1887 (the 21st year of Meiji), a part of the ryokan, built in a traditional storehouse style, was renovated, and the cafe was completed in 1956 (the 31st year of Showa). The founder of Matsumoto folk art furniture, Shiro Ikeda, is known to have designed it, and Yanagi Soetsu, known as the “father of the Mingei (folk art) movement,” reportedly visited and praised it.
In recent years, it has also been selected as one of the “Top 100 Cafes” on Tabelog(Japan).
Inside the cafe, they offer various toasts (using restaurant bread from Matsumoto’s famous “Komatsu Bread Shop”), homemade brownies (single item, 300 yen), and homemade pudding (single item, 400 yen). Additionally, customers can enjoy “Mont Blanc” (single item, 600 yen), “Apple Tart” (single item, 600 yen), and a “Cheesecake with Homemade Blueberry Sauce” (single item, 600 yen). It should be noted that all desserts are available in limited quantities.
The coffee brewed with water from Matsumoto City, which is mentioned in the Ministry of the Environment’s selection of “Top 100 Famous Waters” (with the Matsumoto Castle Town Spring Water Group ranking 3rd in the “Wonderful Famous Water as a Tourist Destination” category), pairs perfectly. One can spend a graceful moment in the castle town.
