FamilyMart in Japan began selling its “Hokkaido Pumpkin Mont Blanc Pudding” on Aug. 25 for ¥348, including tax. CakeNews tried the new convenience-store dessert to see what it has to offer.

The dessert features pumpkin pudding made with Hokkaido pumpkin paste, topped with whipped cream containing condensed milk and a layer of pumpkin cream. A generous swirl of vivid yellow pumpkin cream is piped Mont Blanc-style on top, giving the dessert an eye-catching appearance that easily stands out on store shelves.
Scoop into it with a spoon, and the pumpkin pudding has a thick, velvety texture. The whipped cream and pumpkin cream layered above it are also relatively rich and substantial, creating an indulgent texture from top to bottom.
Pumpkin, of course, is the star of the flavor. Its distinctive taste comes through clearly from the first bite to the last. At the same time, the dessert is quite sweet, and as we continued eating, its flavor occasionally reminded us of an especially sweet variety of Japanese sweet potato.
At the very bottom is a layer of liquid caramel sauce. Its characteristic bittersweet flavor adds contrast to the rich, sweet pumpkin pudding while giving the dessert a more classic pudding-like finish.
