Taste Test in Japan: Lawson’s Tsukimi Custard Pudding Tart Evokes the Full Moon—even in Cross-Section

Lawson launched its “Tsukimi Custard Pudding Tart” at Lawson convenience stores in Japan on September 1. Priced at 254 yen including tax, the seasonal dessert is inspired by Japan’s autumn moon-viewing tradition. We tried it for ourselves.

The dessert combines the flavor of custard pudding with whipped cream and custard cream. A tart shell is baked with a pudding filling made with condensed milk from Hokkaido, then topped with layers of whipped cream and custard cream. The yellow custard in the center represents the full moon, giving the tart a distinctly autumnal appearance.

In Japan, tsukimi—literally “moon viewing”—is an autumn tradition centered on admiring the full moon. Round rice dumplings called tsukimi dango are among the customary foods associated with the occasion. In recent years, restaurants and convenience stores have also introduced seasonal “tsukimi” items featuring round, yellow ingredients or decorations that resemble the moon. Lawson’s tart brings that familiar motif to a Western-style dessert.

The custard cream in the center is soft and almost runny. The whipped cream surrounding it is slightly firmer, creating a pleasant contrast between the two.

Although the tart is noticeably sweet, the custard also delivers a rich egg flavor. Its pudding-like taste is complemented by the mellow whipped cream, while the different textures keep the cream-filled dessert interesting from one bite to the next.

When the tart is sliced in half, the combination of yellow custard and white whipped cream resembles an egg—a familiar visual motif in many Japanese tsukimi dishes. The dessert therefore conveys its moon-viewing theme both from above and in cross-section.

The contrast between the soft custard and firmer whipped cream is particularly memorable. This is an autumn convenience-store dessert in Japan worth checking out for anyone who enjoys pudding, custard, or cream-filled sweets.
