On its opening day, around 300 people lined up outside the store, with waiting times reaching up to two hours. Some customers reportedly began waiting at around 1 a.m., and the store remained busy until closing. Among the sweets, Japanese-style parfaits, led by the Matcha Mochi Parfait, proved especially popular. More than 300 parfaits were sold over the opening weekend.

The strong start was supported by brand awareness built before the opening, including a brand experience event held at JAPAN House Los Angeles, as well as exposure through media outlets and influencers on social media. Posts and word-of-mouth from customers have also spread online, reflecting growing local interest in Japanese-style matcha sweets.

In addition to sweets, meal items that have become staples at the brand’s overseas stores, including in-store-prepared Chicken Nanban and Katsu Curry, have also performed well. Many customers visiting for parfaits have also ordered meals and drinks, with the store being used as a place to experience a wide range of Japanese food culture.

The brand was founded in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo, in 2001. In 2012, it established its Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore and began expanding overseas in Southeast Asia. In 2018, it established its North America headquarters in California, preparing its structure for expansion in the U.S. market. The Pasadena store is positioned as a flagship location that communicates Japanese tea culture and the brand’s worldview through its products, service and space.
The company aims to expand to 100 stores in North America and 200 stores worldwide by around 2030. As of May 9, 2026, it operates 17 overseas stores. Amid the growing global popularity of matcha, the strong opening of its first directly operated flagship store in North America is attracting attention as a sign of local demand for Japanese tea cafes.
